Noordschans. This mill dates back till 1716 but was dismantled in 1921 after a storm. It grinded malt for distilleries and from the looks on the sign to are going to restore or redesign it.

Middellandstraat. One of the joys of living in a big city is getting to know all sorts of food. I asked the shopkeeper what the green, bubbly things in the middle were and he told me they were karaily's from India. They are some kind of melons of which you scrub the skin before you can eat them.

Melanchtonweg. Getting rid of your garbage is a hassle for all of us. Nothing compared to Napels, Italy but still. In my neighborhood we have big underground containers were people get rid of their household garbage and places like these where you can bring you old bikes, fridges, garden disposal etc.

Westblaak. Happy New Year!! I want to thank all of my followers and visitors from the Netherlands and abroad for leaving their kind remarks and comments or their helpful approvements (Roeb ;-) ). I wish nothing but peace and love for all of you in 2012 and the years long after.
But...it is also the first of the month and therefor theme day. Today's theme being the best photo of 2011. I simply looked at the photo's that got the most comments and this one of the cube houses thus qualified as the best.

My place. My son eating an oliebol. An oliebol is a traditional Dutch food. Oliebollen (literally oil balls) are traditionally eaten on New Year's Eve and at funfairs.
Oliebollen are a variety of dumpling made by using two spoons to scoop a certain amount of dough and dropping the dough into a deep fryer filled with hot oil. In this way, a sphere-shaped oliebol emerges.
The dough is made from flour, eggs, yeast, some salt, milk, baking powder and usually sultanas, currants, raisins and sometimes apple pieces and zest or succade. The dough needs time to rise for at least an hour. Oliebollen are usually served with powdered sugar.

Voorhaven. The distillery mill used to produce the malt for malt wine, has a long and renowned history. Originally built in 1727, is was burned down, moved and rebuild. I think it is open for visitors on wednesdays and saturdays.

Beursplein. It's just one more month to go for Sinterklaas and all the appropriate candy is in the stores for weeks now. Here you see chocolate letters. You can give these (with the right letter being the first letter of the first name) to anyone at Sinterklaas. Co-workers, family, little children. Chocolate is always good.
