Lijnbaan. The famous words from the Dutch winner of the Tour de France; The tour is won in bed are stuck to the World Trade Center. It's only a couple more weeks till the Tour starts in Rotterdam and the project Yellow Lines will show us more quotes from famous Tour bikers on various buildings the coming weeks.

Yesterdays winner of the funniest caption competition is Peter.
Thing is I am pretty sure he 's from Rotterdam, so a postcard might not make his day.
Let me know Peter!

Scheepstimmermanslaan. A man, a dog and a bike. Today's post is dedicated to Irina from Moscow Daily Photo. She went out of her way to photograph my son's waterpolo team which is playing a 3 day tournament in Moscow. Without me and her both being part of the City daily Photo community this would have been impossible. Just goes to show, friends are nearer than you think and the world is a small place isn't it!

Poolsestraat. It has been in fashion for some time but now the weather is finally decent again, the wave boards come out from their hiding places. According to wiki; The Wave has made multiple television and movie appearances from international pop culture movies such as Hannah Montana: the Movie to smaller cult-classics such as the Rob and Big television show. It was also awarded the 2008 “Seal of Excellence” as well as “Kids Product of the Year” from Creative Child Magazine.
In America, two states have forbidden the use of The Wave due to a large amount of accidents occurring.

Winkelcentrum Plaza. The bakery in this shopping mall sells the above posted pastry as a "Rotterdammertje". For the sake of my blog I had to try them of course and they are yummy. Bit hazelnut/meringue and lots of icing sugar.

I doubt whether it can be combined with the other Rotterdammertje I ate a couple of days ago.

My place. Yesterday I noticed for the very first time there is an actual sausage called a Rotterdammertje.

This is the only thing I could find online (sorry only available in Dutch):

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Virulyplein. Rotterdam fleurt op (something like Rotterdam is blossoming) is an iniative from the Rotterdam centre for Culture and Nature to plant 75 kilo of flowers/eeds and with the help of a lot of neighborhood groups is hoping to cheer up the bleak places in town.

Wijnstraat. A bit of a grim photo today. May 4th is Remembrance Day and although most people will think of the losses during WWII, sadly there are also losses to be thought of among our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Prinsemolenpad. Members of rowing club Nautilus drying and cleaning up their boat.

The Nautilus rowing-club was founded 1 januari 1886 by a group of 10 Rotterdam youngsters. It was located in the center of Rotterdam, and the successes of its members were responsible for a growth in its first 25 years to a memberschip of over 100. All male, since it wasn't until 1917 that the club decided to allow female members as well. In 1924 the club moved to Kralingen and Hillegersberg, as the Maas was getting too busy for rowing. On the waters of the Rotte the club continued to grow, and its members still gains successes, including, shortly after its centennial, three world championships. Nowadays Nautilus has about 500 members, rowing at two locations.

Leuvehaven. It's the first of the month again and today's theme among the city daily photobloggers is Statues. I've thought about it and although this is a photo I posted earlier, I am using it again (it is also my profile photo on Twitter).

This statue that goes by different nicknames (City without a heart is the most well known one) was made by Zadkine who was inspired when he visited Rotterdam shortly after WWII.
May 14th 1940, the city had been bombed heavily and due to the enormous fires after it, "lost its heart". A huge area had to be re-designed and rebuilt as you can see here at the before and after situation.
