Linker Rottekade. Rowing on the river De Rotte from which Rotterdam gets its name. The guy at the bike was giving some much needed directions.

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

's-Gravendijkwal. The waitress at restaurant Lux.

Monday, March 29, 2010

Rodezand. Tailors@work.

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Ochterveltstraat. These houses dating back till 1899 are the living proof not all houses were burnt down or bombed during WWII.

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Hoogstraat. Great chairs and a great name.
For something completely different; don't forget to put your clock forward tonight!

Friday, March 26, 2010

Hoogstraat, comic store Yendor sells Dutch comics and manga's, english manga's and graphic novels and has the largest collection of comic figures (and action figures). A dream for any kid and many grown-ups.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Meent. And now that spring has sprung De IJssalon is also open again from 11 in the morning till 11 in the evening!

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

's-Gravendijkwal. Contrary to a lot of other bigger cities, Rotterdam doesn't really have a concentrated red light area. Amsterdam attracks a lot of tourists (and others interested) with the women in the windows displays, but we don't have that. A Lido though, we do have, so if you are into seeing naked women perform, you now know where to go.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

's-Gravendijkwal. Wanna see some live jazz at Dizzy's tonight? The NY band from Arhtur Kell appears to be playing.

Monday, March 22, 2010

Oostplein. I was just wondering what we he was going to do when he got home with his carpet.

Sunday, March 21, 2010

Hoogstraat, Dutch Universal Studio. ‘Passion Blue’ a new Dutch tradition. Pure simplicity in graphic shapes somewhat tongue in cheek to the original Delft Blue. Linda Zoon's photography has been transformed by stylishly editing into a graphic design which, in a fascinating way draws direct attention from the viewer.

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Beukelsdijk. In a country where it rains 367 days of the year AND people are known to eat bikes for breakfast, it's best to use this Dutch design-award winning umbrella SENZ. This umbrella, designed and constructed by 3 students from the nearby Technical University, can take storms up till 130 km per hour (check out this movie : Senz umbrella in a wind tunnel).

Friday, March 19, 2010

Goudsesingel. I can't remember the name if this Italian coffee shop (with free WiFi from the looks of all the students working there) but it had good muffins and a nice relaxed vibe.

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Mariniersweg. O yes. Spring is definitely in the air. In the Netherlands that can also mean we have hail blizzards tomorrow, but still, the future is looking bright and sunny.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Zuidplein. The only thing I could find online about this piece of art is that this man and woman are alone, but will never meet each other. It's supposedly called City Walk. Pessimistic or realistic?

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Prins Hendrikkade.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Museumpark, a sculpture by Henk Visch called ouch, my buttocks, who didn't want to show someone, but rather the 'movement of sitting'.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Racing down from the Erasmusbridge.

Saturday, March 13, 2010

1e Middellandstraat. Chicken garlic menu with fries and a salad now € 7,25 (10 dollars). They also do interviews for chefs, so if you are looking for a job...

Friday, March 12, 2010

's Gravendijkwal. We recently discovered that restaurant Lux no longer carries its world famous anti pasti trolley. Sharpened regulations. They do change the menu now every so often, so that the caramelized red onions, the mushroom, the broccoli with anchovis, the egg with anchovis sauce, the black and green olives, the pepper salad etc. will come by anyway.

Lijnbaan. Today Eric Tenin, the founder of the City Daily Photo group with Paris Daily Photo, celebrates his 5th anniversary.
Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, all CDPBloggers are invited to post a tribute shot from their own city using The Tenin Technique of placing the camera on the ground to make an image, or of skewing/tilting the composition.
Seriously, I couldn't tilt this any more or 'IcicParis XL' would simply be vertical. Hope you have a great day Eric and looking forward to many more years to come!

Roomselaantje. This pelican symbolises the catholic church of Kralingen that was here between 1650 and 1802.

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

Ernst Happelstraat. I don't know if I find the Pathe cinema, the bowling centre next door or the police station that are here, extremely ugly in this green/purple/pink style or have accepted that they simply literally out standing and easy to recognize.

Monday, March 08, 2010

I think most Rotterdammers would immediately recognize this as being the tip of the Erasmusbridge. The Erasmusbrug was designed by Ben van Berkel and completed in 1996. The 808 metre long bridge has a 139 metre-high asymmetrical pylon, earning the bridge its nickname of "The Swan".
The southern span of the bridge has a 89 metre long bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in West Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.

Groene Tuin. After the predicted hell and doom (impersoned by new snow) we were very happy to have a nice sunny day yesterday. What you can also see in this photo is the new Mc D. Dutch Deluxe. A hamburger like any other but with a much better (said) bun. Any Dutch readers out there who tried it yet?

Saturday, March 06, 2010

Olympiaweg. The Feijenoord Stadion, better known by its nickname De Kuip (the Tub), was completed in 1937.
It is the home stadium of football club Feyenoord, one of the traditional teams in the Netherlands. In 2000, the Feijenoord stadium hosted the final of Euro 2000, played in the Netherlands and Belgium, with France beating Italy in extra time.

A new stadium for Feyenoord is currently being designed. Already nicknamed 'De Nieuwe Kuip', it will be located a few hundred meters from the current Feijenoord Stadion, on the shores of the river Nieuwe Maas. Feyenoord officials have expressed a desire for the new stadium to have a similar atmosphere as the current one. The projected capacity will be 80,000-100,000.
The new stadium must be completed in 2016, right in time for the 2018 World Cup, and could possibly also be Rotterdam's main weapon in a bid for the 2028 Summer Olympics. A definitive design is expected in the following years.

Using the slogan, 67 AOW no way, a couple of days ago a lot of cleaners, nursing personel and port personel went on strike against the fact that the general retirement law (in Dutch AOW) will probably go from the age 65 to 67. With a growing greying population I already learned in middle school that someone, someday has to pay the bill. Of course now that we are without government, action groups smell a chance.
But to be honest, we have just been spoilt too much. I know no one, who actually works till he is 65 at the moment. Most 'older' people stop at 61 or even earlier, using regulations that don't exist any more. The alternative i think, is that everybody gets less and I don't think that is their aim either.

Thursday, March 04, 2010

Beukelsdijk. Most of the Dutch have had it with the cold and the rain. The forecast however predicts more of it these coming days. The weather is seriously off.

Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Admiraliteitsstraat. View on the Willemsbridge.

Tuesday, March 02, 2010

Conradstraat. The Central Station that has to be finished 2013 is finally getting somewhere. Yesterday the minister (under resignation coz the government 'fell' about 2 weeks ago) of Transport publicly declared the construction of the central Terminal to be opened.
As you can see lots of hot shots in yellow (straight) jackets.

Monday, March 01, 2010

Horvathwet. Todays theme day among the City Daily Photobloggers is Passageway and here you see the passage way for the people who visited Sparta-NAC yesterday in the pouring rain. The outcome of 2-2 had little to do with football coz the field was a swamp, but the match showed spectular and almost comic slidings and struggles. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants
